Best men's natural deodorant NZ: what actually holds up after training

You don't need a men's formula. What to look for if you train, the four natural deodorants you can buy in NZ compared, and the bodi scents to start with.

The best men's natural deodorant in New Zealand is the one that still works after training, has no baking soda in it, and smells like something you'd choose rather than something you were handed. You don't need a men's formula; odour works the same way on everyone. In NZ that leaves four worth your time: Two Dudes, Slo, Wild and bodi. Here's what each does well, and where each falls down.

We make bodi, so take the bias as read. This is written for the bloke whose partner switched to natural deodorant a year ago and keeps telling him to try it, and who assumes it'll be too weak for the gym. Sometimes that's true. It depends on what's in the stick, not on who it was marketed to.

"For men" is a shelf label, not a formula

Sweat is nearly odourless when it arrives. The smell comes later, when the bacteria on your skin break it down into several different compounds. A deodorant's job is to deal with those bacteria and compounds, and that job is the same whoever's wearing it. The "for men" version on the supermarket shelf is usually the same formula with a darker label and a woodier scent.

What does change if you train is how hard the formula gets tested. More sweat means more for the bacteria to work on, so a stick built on one active gets found out in the second half of the day. That's a question of ingredients, not gender, and it's why this guide spends more time on ingredient lists than on packaging.

What to look for if you train

Four things
  • More than one odour active. Odour is several compounds, made by different bacteria. One active handles part of it. Two or three handle the afternoon.
  • No baking soda. This is the counterintuitive one. Bicarb feels "strong" and it does work on odour, but it sits at about pH 8 to 9 against skin that sits at about pH 5, and it's the usual reason natural deodorant gives people a red, itchy underarm. Freshly shaved skin and a hard session make it worse. The bicarb explanation is here.
  • A starch for moisture. Tapioca or arrowroot, soaking up some of the surface wet so you feel drier. Drier, not dry. Nothing in this category stops you sweating.
  • A scent that stays quiet. The complaint men have about natural deodorant is rarely that it smells bad. It's that it smells like a health food shop. Woody, salty or clean beats medicinal, and unscented is a legitimate choice.

And the blunt one: if you want to be dry, you want an antiperspirant. Every product below is a deodorant, ours included. The difference, in one page.

The options in New Zealand

Four natural deodorants you can actually buy here, with prices as we found them on 16 October 2026. The gaps are real and we've left them in.

Two Dudes

The NZ men's brand, and the one most blokes have already seen next to the shaving foam. Three scents, a generous 75g stick that works out at the best price per gram here, and a 4.4 star average from more than 800 reviews on their own site. The ingredient list is closer to ours than the branding suggests: magnesium hydroxide and triethyl citrate on odour, tapioca starch for moisture, then sodium bicarbonate fourth on the list in all three scents, so if your skin has reacted to bicarb before, read the label first. Not refillable, and the stick is standard plastic, so if waste is part of your reasoning it's the weak spot. If you want a natural deodorant you can grab with the groceries and never think about, this is the easy answer.

Slo Cedar + Sage

The cheapest on the list at $11.99, in a paper tube, made in New Zealand. Cedar + Sage is the one that reads masculine without trying. Slo's standard formula uses bicarb; they sell bicarb-free Sensitive versions in Wild Orange and Vanilla, which tells you what the standard one can do to skin.

Wild

New on NZ shelves since August 2026 and the cheapest refill you can buy here at $9.49. The aluminium case is the best looking object in this table. Scents lean sweet and fresh rather than woody. The formula on NZ shelves contains bicarb, and the twist-to-refill case is the subject of most of Wild's negative reviews. The full NZ rundown is here.

bodi

Ours. Made in New Zealand, bicarb-free in every scent, three actives on odour (magnesium hydroxide, triethyl citrate and zinc ricinoleate) and tapioca starch so you feel drier. The actives are included at clinically tested levels. The case is $15 with two release buttons so the swap can't jam, and the paper refills are home compostable, confirmed by our supplier. Online only, which is a real inconvenience if you were hoping to grab it at the chemist. The refill is more expensive than Two Dudes per gram, and we'd rather say so than have you work it out later.

If you want bodi but not the florist

Our range isn't split into his and hers, because odour isn't. Six scents plus Unscented, and four of them are the ones to start with if you want nothing sweet or floral anywhere near you.

Amber is the bush after rain and the hut before dark. Herbs and a flick of orange at the top, wet earth and oakmoss through the middle, then oud, amber, dark musk, rum and tonka underneath. The one that says the least and stays the longest.

Sandbar is drying off on the sand. Coconut milk warmed into the skin, sandalwood underneath giving it somewhere to stand, closer to warm husk and driftwood than dessert. By evening it's more wood than beach.

Coast is the East Coast the moment the sun clears the cliffs. Orange and sea salt on cold air, mint growing wild in the rocks, lavender and blue cypress once you're walking out. Sharp and clean, the opposite of a gym bag.

Unscented is nothing at all, which is the right answer if you already wear something and don't want a second opinion from your armpits.

Merino, Bloom and Spritz are the other three. Plenty of men wear them. How to choose a scent covers the lot.

The gym test

Don't judge any of these on the first morning, and don't judge them on a rest day.

Run it properly

  • Apply to clean, dry skin before you leave the house. Two or three swipes. More doesn't mean more protection, it means more on your shirt.
  • Train as you normally would. Shower after if you normally shower after, and reapply then if you want to. That isn't cheating, it's what everyone does.
  • Check at the end of the session, then again at 5pm. Judge on smell, not wetness. Wetness was never the deodorant's job.
  • If you're coming off an antiperspirant, give it a fortnight before you decide. Your sweat glands have been held back for years and they overshoot for a week or two when you stop. What that fortnight is like.

If a stick fails that test, read the label before you blame the category. One active, or bicarb and nothing else, is usually the reason. Try one built differently before you go back to the aluminium.

When something else suits you better

  • You want the biggest stick for the money and you'll buy it with the groceries. Two Dudes, 75g for $18.
  • You want the cheapest natural deodorant in the country. Slo, $11.99.
  • You want to be dry for a wedding, an interview or a summer of deadlifts. An antiperspirant. None of us can do that.
  • You sweat heavily enough that it affects your day. A pharmacist or your GP, not an ingredient list. That can be hyperhidrosis and it's a clinical question.

Common questions

Does natural deodorant work for men?

On odour, yes, if it has more than one active and something for moisture. It won't reduce how much you sweat, because that's an antiperspirant's job and the aluminium isn't there. Judge it on how you smell at 5pm, not on your shirt.

What's the best natural deodorant for sweaty men?

One with two or three odour actives, no baking soda and a starch for moisture. The more you sweat, the faster a single-active formula runs out of road. And reapplying after your post-training shower is normal, not a failure.

Is natural deodorant strong enough for the gym?

A well-built one is, on smell. "Strong" in this category usually means a heavy dose of bicarb, and the trade for that is the rash. Three actives working from different directions gets you the strength without the pH problem.

Do men need a different deodorant to women?

No. Skin bacteria don't check. What differs is scent preference, which is why bodi comes as six scents plus Unscented rather than one "for him" and one "for her".

What's the best men's natural deodorant in NZ?

Two Dudes if you want 75g from the supermarket and don't care about refills. Slo if price is the whole question. bodi if you want bicarb-free in every scent, a refill that doesn't jam and something made here. Wild if you want the cheapest refill and the prettiest case, and your skin is fine with bicarb.

Will natural deodorant stop me sweating?

No. A starch helps you feel drier, and that's as far as any deodorant goes. If dry is the goal, you want an antiperspirant.

Three minis, $5 each, no bicarb.

Amber, Sandbar, Coast or Unscented. Wear one through a week of sessions and see where it is at 5pm. Then keep the case for good.
